Speaking True: Success from Failure
/Have you ever noticed that people don't really want to talk about their failings and their failures? Yeah. If you're honest with yourself, you're going to be able to say, yeah, I don't like acknowledging that I missed the mark on anything.
I mean, we'll sort of make those acknowledgments in passing. "Yeah, I'm a bad actor sometimes." But we don't really want to own with others the fact that we make mistakes and screw up, that we have failings and foibles.
The irony though, is if you look at the research around what we might call success, it's littered with failings that lead up to the supposed success. And some very wise men and women have said that actually, it's all part of the success path.
The key is we have to own the failings in order to learn and grow from them. It's such an interesting challenge.
I was talking with a therapist just recently. She said something that just resonated so deeply with me. I'm a recovering alcoholic, so I have some appreciation for what she shared.
She said, "Ron, I have to crawl on my belly, through the carnage of my life, in order to finally reach a place that I can stand up and own my identity, and be proud for what I had done."
What a great line, imagine that ... crawl on your belly through the carnage of your life.
And if you don't know that there's some carnage in your life, you're just being dishonest with yourself.
So the great secret is that some kind of magic happens when we own our reality. When we own those things. When we own the failings. Then we use that as a springboard to learn and grow.
You might want to try this in the world, You just need to know you're not going to get a lot of support, because nobody else wants to acknowledge that they have failings either. And if they start seeing that you acknowledge your failings, then they might have to acknowledge their's too.
It's incredibly valuable for our own growth and development. It's just not easily supported in the world that we live in. So I guess your commitment has to be to your own growth and development rather than to what the world may think about you and your growth and development.
You might want to try admitting something soon. Something you missed the mark on. Own it, be real, see what comes to pass. It can and will change your life.
